Considering I have somewhat made it a mission to complete all the Spider Man and Batman games from the 8 and 16-bit eras, this was a game that I did not expect to be doing as a playthrough. Spider Man Lethal Foes was a Japan-Only Super Famicom game that never got ported to North America, which is a right shame since I would make the argument that out of all the Spider Man games from the era this is easily the most well balanced and possibly the best Spider Man game of them all. While I was unable to find a translated/patched ROM of the game (I'm not tech savy enough to patch it myself either..sorry) to use for the playthrough, the gist of the story is this according to Wikipedia: After past defeats, Doctor Octopus escapes from prison and forces Curt Connors to help him. Connors attempts to use the Lizard serum to increase his power, but fails. Thus, Lizard becomes Octopus' new employee, while Octopus hires scientist Spencer Smythe to create the Spider Slayers and attack Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Spider-Man attempts to stop Beetle from robbing a bank, but is attacked by the Spider Slayers. While Spider-Man manages to defeat the Spider Slayers, Beetle escapes and is subsequently hired by Octopus. Meanwhile, astronaut John Jameson is attacked by a red and black goo on his spaceship. Spider-Man defeats Beetle, and also defeats Lizard and uses the antidote on him, though it only takes him out of Octopus' control. Mysterio, hearing of Octopus' plans, traps Spider-Man in his headquarters, but Spider-Man defeats him and realizes he left a GPS that tracks Octopus' arms (given to Mysterio when he last helped Octopus). After realizing someone is tracking him using the GPS, Octopus gains Mark II arms with more tentacles and forcefully transforms Alistair Smythe into a human/Spider Slayer hybrid. Meanwhile, Spider-Man tracks the GPS to Octopus' old arms, where he ambushed by Smythe. Later, Octopus sends Green Goblin after Spider-Man, and he chases him across the city. Venom ambushes the Goblin Glider, but Spider-Man stops him. The Venom symbiote leaves Eddie Brock, who informs Spider-Man of Carnage's plan to destroy New York. Doctor Octopus suddenly attacks them, but his new arms are prototypes and begin to explode, causing Spider-Man to celebrate in triumph. Suddenly, the symbiotes come through a portal in the sky. Spider-Man defeats Carnage, who gets sucked back into space with the other symbiotes. Spider-Man celebrates and is victorious. Later, J. Jonah Jameson reads a Daily Bugle article on Spider-Man’s victory, and attempts to write a paper which makes the symbiotes the heroes. Betty Brant scoffs and shreds the paper. This game was a joy to play. I love the fact that while you got your standard villains like Green Goblin, Venom, Doc Ock and you also got a couple lesser known villains like Beetle and Alistair Smyth. The more variety of villains to battle the more I enjoy the game it seems. I also found that unlike many of the super hero games of the era (X-Men, Spider Man VS The Kingpin etc), this game has a very balanced and fair difficulty level. With responsive controls, lots of health pickups and a password system for every level it really cuts down on the frustration factor and makes the game very enjoyable to pick up and play, which cannot be said for every game in the Spider Man franchise. Getting this game today is a bit tricky, since legit Super Famicom games are not cheap at all, usually running between $100 to $200 something bucks. But the other option is reproduction cartridges that are drastically cheaper. Not only are those carts made to be like a North American SNES cart but the games is translated to English as well. That is actually how I came to play it as well since I believe I ended up with a repro cart for around $30, and it worked perfectly. And I normally would not advocate for repro carts but this was good buy and I have enjoyed the game every time I plug it in. I would say give this game try and see what you think. Its a fun, simple and straight-forward platformer that begs to be rediscovered. Thanks for watching!!! Hope You Enjoy!!!
