The Asylum That Sold Tickets to Watch Patients — The Entire Story of Bethlem Royal Hospital
🎵 Now on Spotify:
Almost everyone has heard that Bedlam sold tickets and drew 96,000 visitors a year at a penny each. I went back to the records, and you'll hear where that number really came from, and why the ticket in the legend did the opposite of what you'd expect. We walk through Robert Hooke's palace at Moorfields, opened in 1676 on ground that would betray it, and the Lambeth building that is now the Imperial War Museum. You'll meet James Norris, the American marine held in an iron harness for a decade, and Richard Dadd, who painted The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke inside its walls. And you'll hear about James Tilly Matthews, a London tea broker declared sane by two doctors, who drew plans for the building that held him. Where the record is incomplete, I say so. The two stone figures from the old gates are still there.
