Waraku Kiln is a Raku ware kiln in Kyoto that continues to create tea utensils for the Japanese tea ceremony. We visited the workshop and spoke with its head, Motoo Kawasaki, about his approach to craftsmanship and tradition. Firing is a process that can never be completely controlled, no matter how much experience a craftsman has. The temperature, flames, glaze, and condition of the kiln must all be carefully observed and adjusted, with the maker adapting to the kiln on that particular day. Kawasaki also speaks about how, while some things naturally change with the times, there are others that must be preserved—or sometimes returned to their roots. “If we want this tradition to continue for another hundred or two hundred years, I believe we have to value what has been passed down to us.” For Waraku Kiln, tradition is not simply about repeating the past. It is about understanding the meaning behind what has been inherited and carrying it forward into the next generation. Through the Raku tea bowl, we invite you to discover the philosophy and craftsmanship of Waraku Kiln.
