Kenneth was still alive when police arrived, but investigators were left with very little to work with. He had only been able to give officers a limited description of the person who shot him, and the apartment complex quickly became the center of a complicated investigation. Detectives began working through the people closest to the scene. Kenneth’s brother Rodney described hearing multiple gunshots before Kenneth began beating on the wall separating their apartments and calling for help. Neighbor Jack Wright told investigators he entered Kenneth’s apartment after the shooting, then claimed he was attacked by an unknown person armed with a bicycle wheel. Other residents described arguments, unusual activity around the complex, and people who had been in and around Kenneth’s apartment in the hours before the shooting. But none of those interviews answered the biggest question: Who shot Kenneth Townsend — and why? Then later that afternoon, investigators received a completely different kind of lead. A woman named Stephanie Merrell had been with Kenneth the night before. According to information given to detectives, someone had followed Stephanie through Dalton, and during the night the rear window of her vehicle had been smashed. When her husband later learned Kenneth had been shot, he contacted police because he believed the two events might be connected.
