November 1942. Chest-deep in black swamp water on Papua's north coast, the green U.S. 32nd Infantry Division charged Japanese coconut-log bunkers with rifles and grenades — no tanks, almost no artillery, and half the men burning with malaria. The attack stalled, the division began to come apart, and headquarters far to the rear refused to believe how bad it had become. Then MacArthur sent Lt. Gen. Robert Eichelberger forward with a blunt order: take Buna, or don't come back alive. This is the story of what was actually broken at Buna — and what really fixed it. In this video: ▸ Why the "Red Arrow" Division was thrown into jungle combat green, under-supplied and without heavy weapons ▸ The intelligence failure — an enemy estimated at 2,000 that was really closer to 6,500 at Buna alone ▸ Disease: for every two battle casualties, five men were out of action from fever ▸ Eichelberger's arrival at Dobodura on 1 December 1942 and the relief of Maj. Gen. Edwin Harding ▸ Food, supply, medical care and rest — rebuilding a division that had come apart ▸ Australian Stuart tanks of the 2/6th Armoured Regiment and the combined-arms assault at Cape Endaiadere ▸ Gona, Buna Village, Buna Mission and the last pocket at Sanananda — and what the victory really cost ▸ Why the turnaround was real, but incomplete This was an Allied victory: the Australians carried the bulk of the Papua fighting at Kokoda, Gona and Sanananda, and their tanks cracked the Buna bunkers. This video sticks to the documented record.
