India's Defence Diplomacy Eyes The Mediterranean: Cyprus, Greece and the BrahMos Make Turkey Nervous

The BrahMos is the headline. The real test is the paperwork. India's Defence Secretary heads to the Mediterranean on a visit to Cyprus and Greece, as Delhi pushes maritime cooperation and defence exports into Europe. India and Cyprus signed a defence roadmap through 2031 during the Cypriot president's May state visit. Cyprus is reportedly eyeing the supersonic BrahMos missile, but an EU loan scheme caps non-European components at 35 percent, and Russia's 49.5 percent stake in the joint venture could give Moscow a say. India is still awaiting Russian approval to deliver BrahMos to Indonesia and Vietnam. Ankara is watching closely, given its ties with Pakistan and Cyprus's long dispute with Turkey over northern Cyprus, maritime boundaries and energy. Greece, the next stop, could be another headache for Turkey. Delhi says its aim is partnerships and strategic flexibility.
