China, Russia and India are becoming increasingly connected through trade, energy, infrastructure and finance — but this is not a simple economic alliance.
Together, these three countries represent enormous populations, major industrial capacity, vast energy resources and some of the most important markets in the global economy.
Russia has redirected more of its economic relationships toward Asia. China remains a massive manufacturing center with expanding trade relationships across emerging markets. India is growing as a consumer market, technology hub and manufacturing center while maintaining economic relationships with both Western economies and Russia.
At the same time, BRICS is becoming more important, countries are exploring greater use of local currencies in international trade, and new railways, ports, pipelines and trade corridors are creating more connections across Eurasia.
But this does not necessarily mean the world is dividing into two simple economic blocs.
China and India remain competitors in several areas. India continues to maintain strong economic relationships with Western economies. China remains deeply connected to American and European markets. And Russia has its own reasons to diversify its economic relationships.
The bigger transformation may be the emergence of a more distributed global economy — one built around multiple manufacturing centers, energy producers, consumer markets, financial hubs and trade corridors.
In this video, we explore how China, Russia and India fit into this changing economic network and what it could mean for the future of global trade.
