America is building roads on old tires. One method uses about 23,000 scrap tires per mile, costs roughly half as much as traditional paving, and has carried coal trucks in West Virginia since 2006.
Here is how Mechanical Concrete works, and what is still unproven. American roads earned a D+ in the 2025 infrastructure report card, and the country throws away more than 230 million tires a year.
In this video we explain the road building method invented by Samuel Bonasso, a former West Virginia Secretary of Transportation: why the sidewalls are cut off each tire, how the rings lock crushed stone in place, where it has been used, and what the honest limits are.
