20-Year-Old Cleans River With His Own Hands, Gets Job Offer From Netherlands | Deaf News

When we see dirty streets, polluted rivers and overflowing garbage, it’s easy to think, “What can one person really do?” But 20-year-old BSc student Surendra Singh Choudhary, popularly known as ‘Bittu Tabahi’, chose to act instead of waiting. Living in Biaora, Madhya Pradesh, Choudhary saw the severely polluted Ajnar River and began cleaning it himself on 26 January 2026. The river was covered with plastic, bottles, algae, religious offerings and piles of garbage. He had once planned to build a machine to clean the river, but couldn’t afford it. So, he entered the polluted water himself and began removing the waste by hand. He spent around ₹30,000 of his own money on cleaning equipment and dustbins. He even collected flowers and religious offerings from the river and turned them into compost. Despite suffering skin irritation and infections from the polluted water, he refused to stop. He documented his work on social media, sharing before-and-after pictures that showed the dramatic transformation. His efforts eventually caught the attention of the Biaora municipal corporation, which brought in JCB machines to help remove larger quantities of waste. His story travelled even further when Boyan Slat, founder of The Ocean Cleanup, noticed his work online and invited him to “Come work for us.” But soon after, Choudhary faced another setback. A dustbin he had placed beside the river was broken and thrown into the river, along with all the garbage inside it. Frustrated, he appealed to people to stop damaging the efforts being made to keep the river clean. His message is simple: cleanliness is not just the government’s responsibility.
