1950 MG TD Review | The Classic British Sports Car That Won America
The 1950 MG TD is one of Britain's most recognisable classic sports cars, but does it still deserve its legendary reputation over 70 years later?
In this review, we take an in-depth look at one of MG's most important models, exploring its fascinating history, distinctive styling and what it's really like to drive on today's roads.
The MG TD arrived as a much-needed update to the ageing MG TC. While some enthusiasts believed it had been softened to appeal to the American market, the formula clearly worked. More than 30,000 examples were built, with around 24,000 exported to North America, helping to ignite America's love affair with British sports cars.
Powered by a 1,250cc four-cylinder engine producing around 57 horsepower, the MG TD was never about outright speed. Even when new, reaching 60 mph took over 18 seconds, but performance isn't what makes this little roadster so special.
Although it won't trouble modern hot hatches, the MG TD remains a wonderfully engaging classic that captures everything people love about post-war British motoring.
