Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has raised concerns over Uganda’s democratic and human rights record during a meeting with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey. Ssenyonyi said Uganda’s appearance on the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) agenda informed Botchwey’s fact-finding mission. He raised concerns over the 2026 electoral process, including results declaration, biometric voter verification and alleged restrictions on opposition activities. Ssenyonyi also cited arrests and abductions, political disruptions and the suspension of civil society organisations. He said Uganda’s Commonwealth membership comes with obligations under the Commonwealth Charter on democracy, human rights and good governance.
