What if we measured minimum wage in gold? In this video, how many grams of gold could be purchased with the minimum wage between 1985 and 2025? In this video, we compare the gold equivalent of the minimum wage across 12 countries and how it has changed over the past 40 years. The countries included are the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Australia, South Korea, Türkiye, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, China and India. Instead of looking only at wages in local currencies, we convert each country’s monthly minimum wage or official wage floor into grams of pure gold. This allows us to compare wages across different currencies and decades using the same financial benchmark. Did minimum wages actually gain value over time — or did the numbers simply get bigger? HOW WAS IT CALCULATED? For each country and year, the monthly wage was converted into grams of gold using the annual average exchange rate and annual average gold price: Monthly Wage × 31.1034768 ÷ (Annual Average Gold Price × Annual Average Exchange Rate) The exchange rate is expressed as local currency units per US dollar. The result shows how many grams of gold the selected monthly wage was worth in each year. WHY GOLD? Gold is not a perfect measure of purchasing power, living standards or cost of living. It does not directly account for: • housing costs • food prices • taxes • social benefits • healthcare • income distribution • household income • local purchasing power Instead, gold is used here as a common long-term financial reference that allows wages from different countries and currencies to be compared on the same scale. HOW WAS THE DATA PREPARED? Wherever possible, directly verified historical minimum wage data was used. For periods where complete wage data was unavailable: • available nominal wage growth rates were used where appropriate • where these were unavailable, annual CPI changes were used for modelling • observed, representative, official-floor and modelled values were tracked separately in the underlying dataset The purpose is not to present reconstructed values as directly observed data, but to build the most consistent long-term comparison possible while distinguishing between different data types. CHINA China does not have one single nationwide minimum wage that applies uniformly across the entire country. Rather than using the minimum wage of a single city or province to represent all of China, representative values derived from provincial minimum wage data were used, incorporating population and time weighting. INDIA For India, the series should not be interpreted as one legally binding national minimum wage. The comparison uses the National Floor Level Minimum Wage published by the Government of India as the national reference series. WHAT DOES THIS COMPARISON SHOW? This video allows us to explore questions such as: • How did minimum wages perform against gold over 40 years? • Which countries gained or lost value relative to gold? • How did the gap between countries change over time? • Which countries experienced the biggest long-term shifts? • How did exchange rates affect the gold value of wages? • How did major movements in gold prices change the ranking? The comparison should not be interpreted as a complete measure of prosperity or quality of life. It is one way of examining the long-term value of wages using a common financial benchmark. Which measure do you think is more useful when comparing wages over several decades: local purchasing power, inflation-adjusted wages, US dollars, or gold?
