Britain sent Ukraine 14 Challenger 2 tanks. One became the first ever lost to enemy fire. The survivors stopped leading assaults and started shooting from three miles out. This is the full, honest record of the Challenger 2 in Ukraine, three years on. Fourteen tanks were pledged on 14 January 2023 and arrived that March, all of them going to the 82nd Air Assault Brigade. By September 2023 one was burning near Robotyne, ending a reputation built over two decades of service. By 2025 Ukrainian crews were describing the same tank as a sniper rifle. We cover what actually changed and why. The first combat loss and the competing open-source accounts of what killed it, mine then missile, or artillery already zeroed on the road. The doctrine shift that pulled the Challenger 2 out of assaults and turned it into long-range fire support. And the crew claim at the centre of the story: a commander with the call sign Hera told Ukrainian Army TV his crew hit a Russian infantry fighting vehicle at 5,300 metres on the Kursk axis, reported by UNITED24 Media on 1 September 2025. No engagement date, no ammunition type and no footage of the impact have been published, so we treat it as a claim, not a confirmed record. We also correct the comparison that circulates with it: the famous British long-range kill was a Challenger 1 in February 1991, not a Challenger 2 in Iraq. Along the way: why the rifled L30A1 gun and its HESH round make this tank uniquely good at the job it ended up doing, and why that same rifling left Ukraine with an ammunition supply nothing else in its fleet could share. How the Challenger 2 record compares with Leopard 2 and M1 Abrams losses, and why all three converged on the same cautious role inside the drone belt. The "too few to matter" critique from British commentators, examined fairly. And what 14 tanks taught Britain before the 148 Challenger 3s now running late on a turret gearbox problem. Loss figures come from visually confirmed open-source tracking and are minimums, not totals. Where accounts conflict, we say so on screen.
