J. Cole's mainstream breakthrough is my favorite rap album of the 2010s. 2014 Forest Hills Drive is a concept album about his youth and the house where he was raised. Years later, after selling six million copies of this album, J. Cole bought the house and rents it out as low-cost housing to families in his native Fayetteville, NC. My point is that Forst Hills Drive is not some clever marketing stunt. It's heartfelt and genuine, which is exactly why I like it. You've likely heard "Wet Dreamz" and "No Role Modelz" since they were massive radio and streaming hits but my favorite song on the album is "Fire Squad." Hot fire, indeed.
EDIT: Can you believe that it took four record companies to release this album? I wonder if that was the result of a bidding war? I'll find the answer and share it when I do.
