I spent $3,000 on Upwork connects and profile boost in a single week to answer one question: is Upwork pay to win in 2026? 57 proposals, every one bid at 200 connects or more. That got me a 28.1% reply rate against my usual 26%, 16 conversations, 9 calls and 8 offers, of which I won 5 and turned 2 down. The result is two retainers at $1,500 and $1,600 a month, an hourly contract paying $1,242 a month, and $724 of one-off work, so roughly $4,342 a month contracted off a single week of applying.
