Microsoft Foundry is where teams build with AI in Azure. Before anyone types a prompt, I set up 4 things: budget alerts, tight roles, a checked safety filter and a plan to stop the token charges. If your company is turning on AI, this keeps the bill and access in check.
Update Oct 7, 2026: Microsoft now lists gpt-4.1-mini as Deprecated, retiring Apr 14, 2027.
What this would cost you
1) Cost analysis showed under $0.01 (read Oct 4, 2026). On Oct 10, 2026 my subscription is in its free first month, which will end. At Microsoft's published prices: under $0.01 (ESTIMATE).
2) Licenses: none needed.
3) Estimated total for you, 1 test request: under $0.01 (ESTIMATE).
Prices, Oct 10, 2026: $0.40 in, $1.60 out per 1M tokens, Global Standard (Azure Retail Prices API; https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pri...)

This is Ep1 of my Microsoft Foundry series, AI Agents the Safe Way. New to Azure? Watch the Start here video (Ep0) first: • Microsoft Foundry: AI Agents With Humans i...
My setup: a $100 subscription budget with email alerts at 50, 80 and 100%; a $25 budget on the series resource group with a forecast alert too; a builder that isn't an owner and a demo user with only Foundry User; 1 small model at 10,000 tokens per minute; guardrail checked, keys off. I delete the model deployment after the test. The workspace stays up until the finale's full teardown.
What we know (Microsoft docs)
The Azure spending limit isn't available on Pay-As-You-Go subscriptions (source 6).
Budgets send alerts. Microsoft says resources aren't affected and consumption isn't stopped (source 4).
Cost data typically shows up within 8-24 hours and budgets are evaluated every 24 hours, so an alert can come a day late (source 4).
Azure OpenAI doesn't currently offer a hard limit that stops you at your budget (source 3).
The tokens per minute you assign to a deployment map to its rate limit (source 7).
Foundry User is for building and testing in a project. If someone only talks to agents, Microsoft points to the smaller Foundry Agent Consumer role (source 2).
Models get the Microsoft.DefaultV2 guardrail by default, and default guardrails can't be edited (sources 9, 10).
API keys give full access and can't be scoped to users. Turning keys off can take up to several hours to apply (sources 11, 12).
What we don't know, or this video doesn't cover
Your bill: it depends on your model, region and usage.
Whether a guardrail catches everything. It won't; results vary with your setup, so test it (source 9).
