Millions of voter names deleted: Why is India protesting? | Explained | BBC News India

Indians are protesting, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. At the centre of the controversy is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), an exercise to update India’s voter lists. Millions of names have been removed from electoral rolls during the revision process, raising questions about transparency, voter eligibility and the risk of eligible citizens losing their right to vote. The Election Commission, however, has defended the exercise, saying it is a periodic process necessary to clean up voter lists by removing the names of people who have died, migrated, are registered more than once or are otherwise ineligible. So, what is the SIR, why is it controversial, and why are protesters demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation?
