The ancient Near Eastern Chaoskampf tradition — the mythological pattern in which a creator deity or storm god defeats a primordial sea dragon to establish cosmic order — provides the essential cognitive background for a significant body of Old Testament poetry and prophecy. In the literature of ancient Ugarit and Mesopotamia, this chaos-combat motif served as the paradigm for divine kingship: the god who defeats the chaos serpent is the god who rules. The Hebrew Bible engages this tradition not through adoption but through systematic theological subversion. Drawing on lexical analysis, intertextual comparison with Ugaritic and Babylonian primary texts, and close reading of the major passages in Job, the Psalms, and Isaiah, this paper argues that biblical writers deployed the full semantic matrix of Chaoskampf imagery — Leviathan, Rahab, Tannin, Yam, Nahar, and their ANE cognates — as a sustained polemic against the mythological traditions of Israel's neighbors. The result is a coherent three-epoch theology of divine sovereignty over chaos: primordial sovereignty established at creation, historical sovereignty actualized at the Exodus, and eschatological sovereignty anticipated in the final defeat of Leviathan at the Day of the Lord. The paper further argues that this tradition is not ornamental in its primary texts but constitutive — the Chaoskampf register provides the theological framework within which Job's suffering is addressed, the Psalms ground Yahweh's covenant faithfulness, Isaiah articulates the ultimate hope of the new creation, and the New Testament presents the identity and mission of Jesus as the definitive embodiment of Yahweh's sovereignty over every form of chaos. The chaos imagery of the Hebrew Bible is ultimately not a problem requiring apologetic explanation but a theology requiring theological exposition.
