Sandy Island was about 25 kilometres long on digital maps. In the Coral Sea, the evidence showed open ocean. This episode follows an uncertain nineteenth-century report through paper charts, shoreline databases and modern scientific mapping. Hydrographic authorities had already removed the feature, but other data products kept copying it forward. A note on dates: the French chart removal is given as March 1979, following SHOM's own account. The ship's 2012 survey track ran about five kilometres south of the supposed island; the approximately 1,300-metre depth refers to that track.
