🍂 At Ocean View Cemetery near Astoria, Oregon, sea captains, a senator, and a poet reveal the history behind the headstones.
From the Flavel House to the Peter Iredale shipwreck, discover the people and places that shaped Oregon’s northern coast.
🪦 Welcome back to Stories in Stone.
Our journey begins at Astoria’s Pioneer Cemetery, where many early grave markers have disappeared, then continues to Ocean View Cemetery in nearby Warrenton. Along the way, we explore the Columbia River waterfront, historic houses, and the stories preserved in stone.
Meet Captain George Flavel, whose work on the Columbia River helped shape Astoria, and visit his remarkable Flavel House Museum. Explore the boarded-up home of his son George Conrad Flavel, where documented history and local legends have become intertwined. Discover Captain Alfred Crosby’s maritime past, U.S. Senator Charles W. Fulton’s modest grave, and John Andrew Buchanan’s connection to Oregon’s state song. We’ll also visit the Peter Iredale shipwreck and reflect on how the places we explore change the way we remember the past.
Thank you for walking with me through Astoria and Ocean View Cemetery. 🍂
