What’s inside a ship’s lifeboat, and what has to keep working when the ship itself can no longer keep people safe? This video goes inside the hidden survival system of a modern ship’s lifeboat—from muster and evacuation to launching, release mechanisms, self-righting design, propulsion, ventilation, emergency food and water, distress signals, and the maintenance that keeps everything ready. A lifeboat is much more than a small orange boat filled with emergency equipment. It is a compact engineered system designed to get people safely off a ship, move them away from danger, protect them from the sea, buy time for survival, and help rescuers find them. When the enormous ship around you can no longer keep you safe, this much smaller survival system has to take over.
