She followed the thread backward. Past the lights. Past nineteen. Past the window. Past the street. All the way home. It Didn't Start There is Chapter 12 of The Woman with the Scarlet Heart — an original 17-part fictional musical by Bluebird & Soul. This chapter explores childhood adversity, intergenerational patterns, inherited survival strategies, social and cultural conditioning, family systems, womanhood, forgiveness, agency and the scripts we can receive long before we know we are carrying them. Sometimes understanding a pattern means following it backwards. Where did I learn to read the weather? Where did I learn to keep the peace? Where did I learn that being useful, pleasing, desirable, quiet or easy might help me belong? Where did I learn what could be spoken, what should be hidden and what simply had to be endured? And then comes another question: WHO TAUGHT THE WOMEN WHO TAUGHT ME? This chapter widens the lens from one woman to generations. Women can inherit ways of surviving from women who inherited them too. Families can pass down adaptations. Cultures can pass down expectations. Ideas about love, gender, sexuality, beauty, sacrifice, motherhood, silence, safety and belonging can travel through generations without anybody consciously deciding to hand them on. Sometimes nobody remembers where the script began. Everybody simply knows their lines. But understanding inheritance does not make harm acceptable. Understanding why somebody behaved as they did does not require calling what happened right. Compassion does not require denial. And forgiveness, where it is meaningful to an individual, does not have to mean rewriting the past into something it wasn't. It can mean relinquishing the impossible task of making yesterday different. Because perhaps the more powerful question isn't: WHERE DID THIS BEGIN? Perhaps it is: WHAT DOESN'T HAVE TO CONTINUE? This is where inherited scripts become especially important. Not every pattern handed between generations is harmful. We inherit love. Humour. Strength. Knowledge. Culture. Stories. Ways of caring for one another. But we can also inherit instructions that once helped somebody survive and may no longer deserve unquestioned authority over another generation. Be good. Keep the peace. Don't make trouble. Be desirable. Be useful. Stay quiet. Make yourself easier to love. Endure. Don't ask for too much. And when those instructions are repeated across generations, they can begin to feel less like inherited choreography and more like simply: THIS IS WHAT WOMEN DO. It Didn't Start There asks what becomes possible when somebody finally notices the choreography. Not so she can find one person to blame. Not so she can erase everything that came before. But so she can decide what happens next. Because awareness creates a possibility that inheritance alone does not: CHOICE. Which parts of the script still belong? Which parts protected women who came before? Which parts hurt them? Which parts have been mistaken for womanhood itself? And which lines do we refuse to hand forward unchanged? Scarlet cannot rewrite the rooms that came before her. But she can begin changing what leaves the room with her. IT DIDN'T START HERE. BUT MAYBE SOMETHING COULD END HERE. A Bluebird & Soul work of ACTIVISM THROUGH CABARET — using music and theatrical storytelling to examine the scripts women can inherit through families, relationships and culture, and what becomes possible when inherited choreography can finally be seen, questioned and consciously changed. ❤️ A GENTLE NOTE ABOUT THIS WORK Creative art and storytelling can be powerful ways to explore difficult human experiences, create meaning and begin important conversations.
