Professor Jiang walks Danny through the strangest rescue story of World War II. As Warsaw fell to the Germans and the Soviets, the family of Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the man Hasidic Jews call the Rebbe, was trapped inside the city. According to Jiang, the man who got them out was Louis Brandeis, the Supreme Court justice he describes as the most powerful Jew in America and the most committed Zionist in the country. Brandeis called a contact who ran German military intelligence, and that contact put together a unit of half-Jewish soldiers, men Hitler had granted full Aryan status for their valor in the First World War, and sent them into Warsaw to bring the Rebbe's family out. They were shipped to Brooklyn, and Brooklyn is where the Chabad-Lubavitch movement was rebuilt.
Jiang, who covers Chinese politics and global power networks, lays out what the movement did next on three simple rules: members handed their money to the leadership, which poured it into Brooklyn real estate they now largely control; families spread across the country and kept to themselves, with children taught not to play outside the community; and everyone had as many children as possible. Persecution, Jiang argues, is what turned the group messianic. If God is testing you, the suffering has a purpose, and the purpose is bringing the Messiah.
The clip then gets specific about the network. Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson, a friend of the Rebbe, pushed the Jackson-Vanik amendment that let Soviet Jews emigrate, and those Russian Jews now make up roughly 15 percent of Israel's population. Jiang plays 1990 footage of Benjamin Netanyahu, then Israel's UN ambassador, asking the Rebbe for a blessing on his political career and being told the Messiah still has not come, so hurry. A year later, Sheldon and Miriam Adelson sit before the same rabbi for a blessing. Adelson went on to spend millions buying Israeli media to back Netanyahu, and became the biggest financial backer of Donald Trump's campaigns.
The Rebbe died in 1994. Jiang's question is whether the convergence of all these careers on one Brooklyn apartment is a coincidence.
