The cowherd boys and their animals had drunk from the Yamuna river. And the water was poisoned by the venomous Kaliya serpent lurking within it.
They collapsed.
And then the boy Krishna glanced upon them with His merciful eyes — and they revived.
In Srimad Bhagavatam 2.7.28, Brahmaji narrates one of the most beloved childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna — the Kaliya lila. And he closes the description with a question that echoes through all of creation — who can perform such herculean tasks but the Supreme Lord?
After reviving His friends and their animals with a single glance, Krishna did not stop there. As if simply playing — as if it were the most natural thing in the world for a young boy — He jumped into the Yamuna river, whose poisoned waters were killing everything that touched them, and confronted the great serpent Kaliya.
He danced on Kaliya's hoods. He subdued him completely with His feet — the very feet that the greatest sages and demigods seek to place upon their heads. And having defeated Kaliya, He ordered him to leave the Yamuna and return to the ocean. The great serpent, humbled and purified by the Lord's touch, departed — and the Yamuna river was restored to purity.
Srila Prabhupada's purport focuses on the single most important word in the verse — who? Who else could have done any of this? Who can revive the dead with a glance? Who can dance on the heads of a venomous serpent and emerge unharmed? Who can purify a poisoned river simply by entering it?
Only the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And He did it all as a young child — not as a cosmic display of power, but as an intimate act of love for His cowherd friends in Vrindavan.
This is the Vrindavan Krishna — not the Lord of cosmic creation, not the speaker of the Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield — but the beloved child of Vrindavan, dancing on the river for His friends. And yet fully, completely, and unmistakably God.
