USP Terre Haute became home to the federal government's Special Confinement Unit, where male prisoners sentenced to death by federal courts were held—and its execution chamber became the site of some of the most consequential federal executions in modern American history. The story began in July 1999, when the Bureau of Prisons opened the Special Confinement Unit at USP Terre Haute specifically to house federal death-row inmates. The unit was designed with individual cells and specialized facilities for prisoners facing federal death sentences. Then came June 11, 2001. After nearly four decades without a federal execution, the United States resumed executions when Timothy McVeigh was executed by lethal injection at USP Terre Haute. He was followed just days later by Juan Raul Garza, and in 2003 by Louis Jones. But Terre Haute's darkest chapter was still ahead. In 2020 and early 2021, the federal government carried out a series of executions at the facility after another long interruption. Between July 2020 and January 2021, prisoners including Daniel Lewis Lee, Wesley Ira Purkey, Dustin Lee Honken, Lezmond Mitchell, Keith Nelson, William Emmett Lecroy Jr., Christopher Vialva, Orlando Hall, Brandon Bernard, Alfred Bourgeois, Lisa Montgomery, Cory Johnson, and Dustin John Higgs were executed at USP Terre Haute.
