Opened to traffic on 1 July 1982, the construction of the East-West Highway was one of the largest project undertaken by the JKR. Before this highway was built, the journey from Alor Star to Kota Bharu may reach over 1,000km, but the highway shortens the distance by 671km, providing a direct route from west to east (and vice-versa). Opened to the public on 1 July 1982, this scenic route took the Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) 15 years to complete and cost more than RM390 million.
