I Returned to This Chinese Village Years Later — Then an Elder Told Me Its Story | 4K

I first visited this remote Chinese mountain village in 2017. Years later, I returned — and an unexpected conversation with an elderly resident led me into the story of the village. Jixiangsi Village (吉祥寺村) is a remote mountain village in Wuyi County, Zhejiang, China. Local historical records trace the village’s Tu (涂) clan back to Changting County in Fujian Province. Their ancestors migrated into this part of Zhejiang during the Qing Dynasty, with different branches eventually settling in mountain villages including Shanxiabao and Jixiangsi. When I first came here in 2017, I took a photo with a friendly black dog I happened to meet in the village. This time, I wondered whether that dog might still be here. While talking with an elderly resident, I showed him the old photo and asked about the dog. He remembered that his family had once kept a dog, although the details did not quite match the one in my photograph. What started as a simple conversation about an old memory slowly became something much more interesting. Another local resident joined us, and together they began talking about their ancestors, their migration from Fujian, and how their families eventually came to live in these mountains. According to their account, their ancestors first settled in Shanxiabao Village before one branch later moved to Jixiangsi as the clan grew. They also shared memories and stories connected with an old temple that once stood here. Long stone slabs from the former temple can still be found in the village today — physical traces of a place that now survives mostly through local memory. As I continued walking, I passed old earthen houses, stone walls, wooden structures and narrow mountain paths. Some houses are still lived in. Others have become quiet as the village population has gradually declined. That is one of the reasons I value conversations like this. I may arrive simply to walk through an old village, but sometimes a photograph, a dog, or a few words with a stranger can open a door into a much larger story. This time, I came back looking for a memory from 2017.
