In 1933, Adolf Hitler went from leading a fragile coalition government to dismantling German parliamentary democracy in just 53 days. When he became Chancellor on January 30, he was not yet a dictator — the constitution remained in force, opposition parties still existed, and the Nazis did not control a parliamentary majority. Then came the Reichstag Fire, emergency powers that suspended key civil liberties, mass arrests and intimidation of political opponents, and finally the Enabling Act. Passed on March 23, it allowed Hitler’s government to make laws without parliamentary approval — providing the legal cornerstone of the Nazi dictatorship.
