There’s a good chance you’ve seen that square bottle hundreds of times.
Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 became one of the most recognizable whiskeys in the world. But behind the black label is a story that, for decades, was rarely told in full.
One of the most important people in that story was Nathan “Nearest” Green, an enslaved distiller who taught a young Jack Daniel the craft of whiskey-making. After emancipation, Jack hired Green as his head distiller, and their work together helped lay the foundation for what would eventually become a global whiskey empire.
But that’s only the beginning.
In this video, we go back to 19th-century Tennessee to explore the real history behind Jack Daniel’s: Nearest Green and the origins of its distilling tradition, the Lincoln County Process, the strange story behind Old No. 7, the safe that contributed to Jack Daniel’s death, the years of Prohibition, the marketing campaigns that turned Lynchburg into a legend, and the role Frank Sinatra and rock culture played in making the bottle an icon.
We also look at the story that resurfaced more than a century later, when researchers began digging through thousands of historical documents and brought Nearest Green’s contribution back into the spotlight.
