Are VARIANT COVERS getting completely OUT OF CONTROL? 😳
Comic book publishers are releasing more and more alternate covers, retailer exclusives, virgin variants, foil editions, and high-ratio incentives. But are these actually good for comic collecting, or are collectors being encouraged to buy the same comic over and over again?
In today's episode of Slabbed Portfolios, we're discussing the explosion of modern comic variants, the psychology behind limited-edition marketing, and whether manufactured scarcity translates into genuine long-term value.
We'll explore 1:25, 1:50, and 1:100 incentive variants, the similarities to the comic speculation boom of the 1990s, and why an expensive exclusive cover isn't automatically a good investment.
We're also looking at the positive side: incredible artwork, supporting comic artists, helping retailers, and giving collectors more choices.
The question isn't whether variant covers should exist. It's whether the industry has taken them too far.
