NEPAL’S DAREDEVIL RESCUE: ARMY PULLS 350 FROM FLOODED TUNNEL A devastating glacier burst near Long National Park sent a massive surge of water, mud and debris into the Trishuli river, cutting off roads and access routes and flooding the Upper Trishuli Hydro Power Project. Hundreds of workers and local residents were trapped inside the project’s tunnel. Nepal’s security forces launched a high-risk rescue operation, managing to bring hundreds to safety—while more than 100 people are still reportedly trapped. The disaster has also raised concerns over stranded Indian nationals, prompting a high-level review in New Delhi. Severe weather, blocked routes and damaged infrastructure turned the operation into a race against the elements. “नेपाली सेना के प्रवक्ता राजाराम बसनेत के मुताबिक सुरंग के एक एंट्री पॉइंट तक पहुंचना ही सबसे बड़ी चुनौती थी” [01:47] With access severely restricted, every minute became critical for those still underground. —- [03:09] 350 RESCUED — A MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH Nepal’s rescue teams managed to bring hundreds of trapped workers and local residents out of the tunnel safely, despite difficult conditions and disrupted communications. “नेपाल के प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय के मुताबिक अब तक 350 मजदूरों और स्थानीय लोगों को सुरंग से सुरक्षित निकाला जा चुका है” [03:09] But the operation is far from over. —- [04:43] INDIA TRACKS STRANDED NATIONALS The disaster has also triggered concern in India over nationals caught in the affected areas. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a high-level review as Indian authorities worked with the Nepalese government to establish the status of those stranded. “जयशंकर ने कहा कि भारत फ्लड अफेक्टेड एरिया में मौजूद सभी भारतीयों की स्थिति पता करने के लिए नेपाल की सरकार से बात कर रहा है” [05:08] —- [05:20] MORE THAN 100 STILL TRAPPED Despite the successful rescue of 350 people, the emergency continues underground. Nepal’s army says more than 100 people are still believed to be trapped inside the tunnel. “नेपाली सेना के मुताबिक अब भी 100 से ज्यादा लोग उस सुरंग के अंदर फंसे बताए जा रहे हैं” [05:22] As weather conditions deteriorate, rescuers face a race against time to reach everyone still inside. —- ♦️The Trishuli disaster is a stark reminder that Himalayan emergencies can rapidly become cross-border crises. Glacier-related hazards, extreme weather, fragile infrastructure and disrupted communications can leave entire communities isolated within minutes. The priority now is rescue—but the larger lesson is prevention: South Asia needs stronger early-warning systems, real-time information sharing and coordinated cross-border disaster response before the next Himalayan disaster strikes.
