How the Netherlands Built a Giant Wall to Stop the Ocean

How does the Netherlands protect millions of people from the North Sea? After the devastating North Sea Flood of 1953 killed more than 1,800 people in the Netherlands, the country began constructing one of the most ambitious flood-defense systems ever created: the Delta Works. In this documentary, we explore how Dutch engineers redesigned parts of the coastline, built enormous dams and storm-surge barriers, and created the incredible Oosterscheldekering, a massive sea barrier with 62 movable gates. During normal conditions, seawater flows through the barrier and natural tides continue reaching the Eastern Scheldt. But when a dangerous storm surge approaches, the enormous gates can close and transform the structure into a temporary wall against the North Sea.
