Step back to Melbourne in March 1955 for the opening year of the Moomba Festival and a full-length look at its colourful street parade. The procession brings together elaborate floats, costumed performers, marching groups and cheering crowds, including the giant smiling ball and its costumed attendants. Moomba was created as a major city festival to draw people into central Melbourne and attract visitors. Its first festival ran for two weeks, from 12 to 26 March 1955, with the parade becoming one of its signature events. The procession also followed a long Melbourne tradition of Labour Day parades, though the earlier Labour Day procession had ended in 1951. This footage captures the atmosphere of Melbourne’s streets in the 1950s and the spectacle of Moomba in its inaugural year. From the floats and performers to the crowds lining the route, enjoy a rare parade from the city’s past. Original vintage footage: Time Capsule Vidz.
