The Hikone Castle Time Bell is located at the foot of the Honmaru (near the Taikomaru) of Hikone Castle, a National Treasure in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. Since the Edo period, this bell has continued to chime five times a day (at 6:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.) at fixed times. It is also commonly known as the “Oyama Bell.” (Features and History) • Ringing Schedule: It rings five times a day—at 6:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.—and is still automatically struck at these set times. • Origin: Originally located in the “Kane-no-Maru” (Bell Enclosure) when the castle was first built, it was moved to its current elevated position near the Taiko Gate because the sound did not carry well to the castle town. • The Current Bell: Commissioned in the first year of the Kōka era (1844) by the 12th feudal lord, Ii Naosuke, it was crafted by bell foundry artisans including Kimi Shinzaemon. • One of Japan’s 100 Selected Soundscapes: Recognized for its atmospheric resonance, it was selected by the Environmental Agency (now the Ministry of the Environment) as one of “Japan’s 100 Selected Soundscapes.”
