Set roughly 100 years after the original Mega Man series, Mega Man X takes place in the futuristic year 21XX, where humans coexist with advanced robots called Reploids. These machines possess free will, intelligence, and emotions, but some eventually become dangerous outlaws known as Mavericks. The story begins with Dr. Thomas Light's final creation, X, an incredibly advanced robot capable of independent thought and emotion. Fearing that humanity would not be ready for such technology, Light sealed X away for testing. Nearly a century later, archaeologist Dr. Cain discovers X and uses his technology to create the Reploids. When Reploid technology spreads, the Maverick Hunters are formed to protect humanity. Their greatest commander is Sigma, an advanced Reploid who initially serves as the Hunters' leader. However, Sigma eventually becomes a Maverick and launches a rebellion against humanity, beginning the Maverick Wars. X joins the Maverick Hunters alongside the mysterious Zero, and the two become legendary partners. Across Mega Man X, X2, X3, and X4, they battle Sigma and increasingly powerful Mavericks while uncovering the origins of the Reploid conflict. Zero's mysterious past and connection to the legendary scientist Dr. Wily become increasingly important to the story. In Mega Man X4, the conflict expands when the powerful Repliforce is accused of becoming Maverick, forcing X and Zero into a devastating war between humans, Reploids, and the Maverick Hunters. The saga reaches a major turning point in Mega Man X5, when Sigma's plans threaten Earth itself. X and Zero must stop a catastrophic weapon while Zero's origins and the true nature of the Maverick Virus are finally revealed. Mega Man X6 continues the aftermath of the disaster, while X7 introduces Axl, a new Reploid with the mysterious ability to copy other Reploids' DNA. In Mega Man X8, X, Zero, and Axl face a new generation of Reploids and another massive conspiracy. Sigma returns once again, but X and his allies ultimately defeat him, bringing the main Sigma conflict to its conclusion. The Mega Man X saga is ultimately a story about free will, humanity, artificial intelligence, discrimination, friendship, and the question of whether Reploids and humans can truly coexist. The eight mainline games follow X's evolution from an inexperienced Maverick Hunter into one of the greatest heroes of the 21XX era, while Zero and Axl become equally important figures in the fight for the future of the world.
