One of the fastest growing cparts of the state is the southwestern coast, an area that is generally defined as the land south of Tampa Bay and mostly north of the Everglades. It’s one of the most densely populated parts of the state, and plenty call it home. However, that paradise soon turned into a nightmare in September of 2022. After years of avoiding near total destruction, the southwestern coast dealt with its fiercest foe yet. Hurricane Ian was a destructive tropical cyclone that laid waste to numerous communities in Cuba and Florida. It was the strongest Tropical Cyclone in the Atlantic in 3 years, with maximum sustained winds of 160mph, and a minimum central pressure of 937mb, weakening slightly before slamming into the Floridian coastline, slowly traversing over the state before recurving and hitting South Carolina. The toll on the people was immense, causing $113 billion in damages and killing 161 total with 13 missing, it quickly became the costliest disaster in Florida state history, and the third deadliest, only behind the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. But the story of Hurricane Ian goes further than the actual storm itself, with many areas in one of the most hurricane prone parts of the country being inadequately prepared for such a storm, especially when preparing for it.
