One Theory of PK: Bimbo Ep004 Bimbo is: Gretchen and Dawson McKenzie The day Bimbo showed up at the studio, we had no idea we were in for what would become a pretty perfect SoulSeed taping. The vibe from the start was highly professional. The team had done their research. Shots were prepped, light tubes were set, and we had taken our best guess at what colors would jive with the band. Gretchen and Dawson loaded in their tour-hardened gear and got to setting up. Once everything was where it needed to be, they disappeared into the kitchen and bathroom to change. What came back into the tracking room was nothing short of astonishing. Full-body pink ghillie suits. Eyeballs everywhere. Human puppets. Somehow, though, all the colors we had picked worked perfectly. So we got to sounds. Siblings. Perfectly tuned drums. Two amps making the highs and lows of one instrument. A vocal mic picking up seemingly equal parts human and stringed energy. Then the red light went on. And Bimbo went. Two and a half minutes later, “Butcher? I Hardly Know Her!” was committed to visual and auditory ones and zeros. We all kind of looked at each other. Holy shit. Four more songs later, we had a set. One take. There’s something that happens when people have put enough hours into their craft that all the individual pieces stop looking like individual pieces. That was Bimbo. The songs, the sound, the look, the gear, the weirdness, the humor, the precision—it was all one thought. A completely cohesive thing presented in sight and sound. You can’t really manufacture that. You can only build a room, get the right humans in it, turn the red light on and hope you’re there when it happens. We were. Please enjoy this episode as much as we did making it.
