● 공연명: 이음 음악제 - 관현악시리즈Ⅳ '상생의 숲' ● 공연일자: 2021년 4월 7일(수) 오후 7시 30분 ● 공연장소: 롯데콘서트홀 국악관현악 '이슬의 시간' 2021년 이음 음악제 - 관현악시리즈Ⅳ '상생의 숲' 국립국악관현악단 위촉 초연작 지휘: 김덕기 (Conductor: Kim Deok-ki) 연주: 국립국악관현악단 (National Orchestra of Korea) 작곡: 도널드 워맥 (Composer: Donald Womack) 작곡가는 국립국악관현악단으로부터 ‘회복과 상생’에 대한 작품 의뢰를 받았을 때, 빛과 어둠의 대조를 소재로 삼고자 했다. 곡의 제목인 서광(曙光)은 새벽녘 동이 틀 무렵의 빛을 뜻하거나, 기대하는 일에 대해 나타난 희망의 징조를 비유적으로 이르는 말이다. 우리는 어둠을 통해서 빛의 소중함을 알게 된다. 어둠의 시간을 많이 경험한 자만이 다가올 빛의 가치를 더욱 반길수 있고, 기다림과 고난의 시간이 길수록 다가오는 행복은 더욱더 달콤해진다. 어둠을 헤치고 돋아나는 새벽의 빛처럼, 작곡가는 희망으로 다가가는 과정에서 겪는 분투의 과정을 ‘어둠과 빛’을 상징하는 소리로 표현한다. 곡이 연주되는 동안 ‘빛’을 상징하는 소리는 ‘어둠’에서 벗어나려고 분투한다. 여러 번에 걸쳐 빛이 등장하고 빛줄기가 내리기도 한다. 하지만 그 빛의 존재는 다시 어둠 속으로 빨려 들어간다. 작은 빛줄기를 의미하는 양금의 연주로 시작되는 이 작품은 지속적으로 빛줄기가 확장을 시도하지만 어둠을 의미하는 관현악단의 연주로 뒤덮인다. 빛이 어둠을 향해 강력하게 돌진하는 과정은 작품 전체에서 악절마다 반복되며 이어지고, 이러한 움직임이 쌓여 고조를 이루는 순간 음악은 평온한 부분으로 넘어간다. 결국 빛이 어둠을 이겨 보상과 위안을 받는 것이다. 정적속에서 시작하여 서서히 밝아지고 분위기가 고조되는 긴 악절 속에서, 우리가 기다리던 빛은 결국 눈부시고 희망찬 마무리를 짓는다. When the composer was commissioned by the National Orchestra of Korea to compose a work on the theme of recovery and co-prosperity, the composer looked to the contrast between light and darkness as its theme. The title “Emerging Light” could metaphorically refer to the light at dawn or to signs of hope shown amid expectations. It is only through experiencing darkness that we can fully appreciate light. The more we experience darkness, the more we understand the value of light. The longer the struggle, the sweeter the happiness. The composer describes the struggle toward hope by means of sounds symbolizing darkness and light. Throughout the piece, musical light struggles to break free from darkness. Numerous times, light appears and rays of light are seen. But the existence of light is swallowed again into gloom. A small glimmer of light expressed by the yanggeum tries to expand every moment. This cycle returns throughout the piece. However, the light and its movements end up being enveloped by the darkness expressed by the orchestra. This cycle continues in every passage. After this, light charges toward darkness powerfully. Several sections build to climactic moments, which are then followed by sections of calm before the cycle repeats itself. At last, light beats darkness. It finally breaks free from darkness and is rewarded and comforted.
