Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world A sudden heavy downpour caused mudflows in populated areas on the island of Lipari in the Aeolian archipelago, Sicily (Italy). The Ponte and Valle streams burst their banks: water, mud, and rock debris rushed through the streets of the town, flooding dozens of residential buildings, including those in the center of the island. In the area of the port of Sottomonastero, cars were stuck in the mud, and debris washed up by the currents reached the beaches and the sea. The most intense phase of the bad weather was observed at night, but heavy precipitation continued in the morning. Firefighters carried out numerous rescue operations, including helping motorists trapped in their cars. Road restoration work continues on the island, including in the Canneto area, as well as mudslide cleanup efforts.
