Before superbikes, before Japanese performance machines dominated the roads, there was another kind of motorcycle culture taking shape on the streets of London.
Young British riders were transforming motorcycles into lightweight, aggressive machines built for one thing — speed.
In this episode, we count down 10 British Café Racers That Ruled London's Streets, from legendary racing-inspired machines to home-built specials that became symbols of the famous Ton-Up era.
We look at the motorcycles that defined this unique period of British motorcycling, including the BSA Gold Star DBD34, Norton Dominator 99, Royal Enfield Continental GT, Matchless G12 CSR, AJS 7R, Velocette Venom, BSA Rocket Gold Star, Triton, Norton Commando, and Triumph Bonneville T120.
Some came directly from the factory.
Others were transformed in garages and workshops.
And the Triton proved that a determined rider could combine the best parts of two legendary British motorcycles to create something entirely different.
But Number 1 has a special place in the story.
The Triumph Bonneville T120 became one of the defining motorcycles associated with Britain's Ton-Up generation — representing speed, individuality, café culture, and the unmistakable sound of a British parallel twin.
From the legendary Ace Café and London's North Circular Road to garages and workshops across Britain, these motorcycles helped create a culture that still influences café racers today.
If you remember these bikes, saw them on British roads, or have your own café-racer story, tell us in the comments which motorcycle you remember most.
