How GPS Was Invented — And How It Really Works Today

Your phone knows exactly where you are. But the satellites above Earth have no idea where your phone is. So how does GPS actually work? In this Hidden Gears documentary, we trace the fascinating history of navigation — from sailors using the stars and John Harrison's marine chronometers to Sputnik, the first satellite navigation systems, and the invention of modern GPS. Discover how a Cold War military technology became one of the most important invisible systems in everyday life. In this documentary, you'll learn: 🧭 How sailors found their position before GPS 🛰️ How Sputnik inspired the first satellite navigation breakthroughs 📡 How the Transit navigation system actually worked ⏱️ Why atomic clocks and precise timing made GPS possible 🌍 How NAVSTAR GPS evolved into a global navigation system 📱 How your phone calculates its location using satellite signals 🔢 Why GPS normally needs at least four satellites 🌐 Why GPS can work without an internet connection ⚡ How GPS timing supports modern infrastructure From the longitude problem to the blue dot on your smartphone, this is the hidden story of how humanity learned to find its place on Earth.
