Master Degree Recital
(望春风Wang Chun Feng) Longing for the Spring Breeze is one of the most iconic traditional Taiwanese melodies, originally composed by Deng Yu-hsien in 1933. In its adaptation for violin and piano—most notably the celebrated version by composer Tyzen Hsiao—the work transforms the nostalgic folk song into a lyrical chamber piece. The violin takes on the singing voice with a sweet, expressive, melancholic tone that mimics the breeze's subtle nuances, while the piano supports the structure with romantic, lush harmony. Through a fluid, emotive dialogue, both instruments capture the poetic longing of the original text and a deep sense of cultural nostalgia.
The Golden Furnace (金色的炉台)
Composed in the 1970s by Chen Gang—co-composer of the famous Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto—The Golden Furnace (金色的炉台) is an evocative, heroic work for violin and piano. Inspired by the glowing atmosphere of industrial steel production, the piece opens with a warm, expansive melody played with a deep, singing tone that evokes the blazing fire of a steel furnace. Blending Western romantic violin virtuosity with Chinese pentatonic lyricism, the work gradually builds toward a passionate, triumphant climax filled with pride, warmth, and artistic intensity.
