It was a dark November evening, six months into a gruelling renovation in a Glasgow tenement. The electricity was cut, the floorboards were up, and exposed wiring hung in the shadows.
Covered in dust and dirt, Kate was stripping the wallpaper in the living room when something started to emerge…
The previous owner, Douglas, had lived there for nearly 50 years; he told them the flat was his first love. Kate and Sandy made it their job to earn that. They spent five years carefully restoring the space: sanding floors, replacing wiring, stripping cornicing back by hand.
But what was emerging from beneath the final layer of paper didn’t belong to Douglas.
According to Sandy, this part of the West End was once a red-light district, and the flat might have been a brothel. Whoever was here in the late 1950s left something on the plaster — a sudden, vivid connection to Kerouac, to the Beat Generation, to a Glasgow that barely exists anymore.
Now, it’s the focal point of Kate and Sandy’s home.
