Program note
This work is a form of computer music that combines conventional instruments with computer-generated sounds (electroacoustic sounds). The piano sound is amplified but is not otherwise processed. The electroacoustic part incorporates sound hybrids as part of the composer’s ongoing exploration of “structural timbre.”
“Structural timbre” is a collective term for a set of sound-synthesis techniques consisting of three approaches: sound morphing, in which one sound gradually transforms into another; sound-within-sound, in which one sound is nested within another; and sound hybridization, in which the characteristics of two or more sounds are combined and crossbred to create a single sound. Since these synthesized sounds do not exist in the real world, they are intended to lead to the discovery of new timbres without a sense of prior familiarity, and ultimately to new musical sounds.
These sounds are also hybrids that lie between being perceived as a single sound and being perceived as multiple sounds. The aim is to create sounds that remain, just barely, within the perceptual boundary of what can be heard as a single sound.
Several sound hybrids are used in this work. In addition to a hybrid of the call of a bird (a flycatcher species), recorded in June 2015, and a sine wave, other hybrids combine sounds such as water and metallic impacts with electronic sounds. The principal hybrid sound quotes the string-instrument theme from the composer’s orchestral work Sound-within-Sound, written in 2014. The theme was created by having the composer recite the Japanese Iroha poem, mechanically analyzing its pitch, and using the resulting pitch sequence as a melody to which harmony was added. The technical challenge here was to further superimpose the phonetic characteristics of the recited Iroha onto the string sound, thereby making the strings “speak.”
Does making string instruments speak cause them to cease being string instruments, or does it deprive them of their characteristic qualities? Do they become merely an uninteresting, hoarse-sounding voice? Or do we simply hear two sounds, a voice and a string instrument, simultaneously? The creative intention behind the sound synthesis—and, ultimately, behind the work itself—is to answer these questions in the negative: the result should be heard as a single, compelling musical sound.
The phonetic sequence of the Iroha poem recited here was:
Iro wa nioedo chirinuru o, waga yo tare zo tsune naramu.
Ui no okuyama kyo koete, asaki yume miji ei mo sezu.
