Why 80 Filipinos left everything behind for an Island Called Hope (Full Documentary) | ABS-CBN News

Presented by ABS-CBN News Documentaries, “An Island Called Hope” (Ang Islang Tinawag Na Pag-Asa) is a 2025 documentary that traces the story of 80 Filipinos who left everything behind in 2002 to start anew as part of government efforts to establish civilian settlement in Pag-Asa — an then-isolated island in the West Philippine Sea. Journalist Johnson Manabat looks into the lives of Filipinos on the island amid tensions between Philippines and China in the disputed waters. Manabat talks to Filipinos who have coped with living in isolation from the “mainland” yet remained steadfast in defending the country’s sovereignty by staying in the island and building new lives. He learns the daily challenges Filipino fishermen face in the area. The documentary features an exclusive interview with Philippine Coast Guard Commodore Jay Tarriela aboard the BRP Teresa Magbanua. The documentary serves as a follow-up and sequel to the 2002 documentary by journalist Dindo Amparo who travelled with the first civilian settlers.
