New York Abandoned a Rail Tunnel Under Riverside Park. In 1991 Amtrak Found People Living Inside THE TUNNEL THAT BECAME A HIDDEN CITY A freight tunnel buried under Riverside Park to end the carnage of New York's Death Avenue sat empty for over a decade, and nearly a hundred people built a community inside its two and a half miles of darkness. When Amtrak came back in 1991, the evictions followed. This documentary traces the Freedom Tunnel from Robert Moses's 1937 West Side Improvement to the last freight train in 1980, the tunnel people and the muralist known as Freedom, and the documentary Dark Days that recorded the community before it vanished. It ends at the Amtrak fences today and the murals north of 91st Street that were never painted over. Told through real footage and the historical record. IN THIS VIDEO Death Avenue and why New York put its freight line underground How the tunnel was built under Riverside Park in 1937 The end of freight service in 1980 and the empty tunnel left behind The tunnel people and the community they built inside Freedom's murals on the tunnel walls Amtrak's return in 1991, the evictions and what remains today CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 1:16 Death Avenue 3:23 Building the Tunnel 6:25 Freight Line Dies 7:28 The Tunnel People 9:22 Freedom's Murals 10:28 Amtrak Returns 12:43 What Remains Today Have you ever ridden Amtrak's Empire Service past Riverside Park?
