Soilkee - Increasing Profit & Feed Security in Dairy Systems

The Williams family has integrated the Soilkee System across their dairy operation in West Gippsland, Victoria. In this video, Grant Williams is joined by Hamish Hunt, an applied bioscientist and industrial chemist with more than 35 years of experience in the dairy industry, to discuss the family's journey from conventional dairy farming toward a regenerative farming system — improving profitability, soil function and the resilience of their farming operation along the way. After experimenting with the Soilkee over many years and committing to whole-farm implementation four years ago, the Williams family has seen significant changes across their dairy system, including a 28% increase in milk production and a 10% increase in butterfat, while maintaining their stocking rate and increasing their profit by $900-$1000/ha/year. They have also removed the need for fertiliser inputs and reduced their reliance on brought-in feed and stored silage, with increased production of home-grown fodder creating greater year-round feed security. Grant and Hamish discuss what they have observed in the paddock, from changes in soil and water-holding capacity to pasture performance and feed availability, as well as the practical and financial results that have driven the continued use of Soilkee across the whole farm.
