There's a gray metal box in your home with one job: cut the power before an overheating wire can start a fire. In a 2012 lab test, a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breaker was pushed to twice its rated current. It should have tripped in under two minutes. It started to smoke at 1:10 — and was still on after four minutes. Federal Pacific Electric panels went into millions of American homes from the 1950s to about 1980. In 1980, the company's new owner reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission that many of its breakers did not fully meet UL requirements. In 2002, a New Jersey court found that Federal Pacific "knowingly and purposely distributed circuit breakers which were not tested to meet UL standards." There was never a recall — and many of these panels are still in use today. This video explains how a circuit breaker is supposed to protect your house, what the tests found, why the government closed its investigation, and how to check your own panel in 30 seconds.
