The Story Behind Don McLean's "Vincent"Written in the autumn of 1970, Don McLean was inspired to write "Vincent" after reading a biography of the post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Deeply moved by van Gogh’s life and artistic passion, McLean wanted to show that the painter was not simply "crazy," but a deeply sensitive artist struggling with mental illness and an uncomprehending world. The famous opening line, "Starry, starry night," directly references van Gogh’s iconic 1889 painting The Starry Night, which he painted while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Throughout the lyrics, McLean paints vivid word pictures referencing several of van Gogh’s famous masterpieces—including The Sunflowers ("flaming flowers that brightly blaze") and The Potato Eaters ("weathered faces lined in pain"). Ultimately, the song stands as a touching homage to an artist who was misunderstood in his lifetime, celebrating his legacy and gentle spirit. #DonMcLean #Vincent #StarryStarryNight #VanGogh #VincentVanGogh #ClassicHits #70sMusic #SongMeaning #BehindTheSong #FolkMusic #AcousticGuitar #ArtAndMusic #StorytellingInMusic
