What happened to Al Zubarah? Today, northern Qatar is home to the silent ruins of a city that once became one of the Gulf's important pearling and trading centres. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Al Zubarah grew rapidly through pearl trading and maritime commerce. Merchants connected the town with Arabia, Western Asia and the Indian Ocean. But the city's rise was followed by conflict, destruction and a long decline. In 1811, Al Zubarah was largely destroyed. The settlement was later occupied on a much smaller scale, but it never recovered its earlier importance. After further conflict in 1895, the town was largely abandoned, and by the early 20th century only occasional fishermen and visitors remained. Centuries later, archaeologists began uncovering what the desert had preserved: streets, courtyard houses, mosques, markets, defensive walls, harbour remains, wells and evidence of the pearl-diving economy. This documentary explores the real history of Al Zubarah — its rise, pearl trade, people, architecture, conflicts, destruction, abandonment and archaeological rediscovery. This is not a fictional story.
